It’s funny, lately I have been thinking about loving on people by spreading on the love much like you’d spread the peanut butter onto bread to make a pb&j. I guess because the visual of spreading the peanut butter over and over to cover the bread makes me think of how we need love and we need to continue to feel loved. And sometimes we need to give out love gently and just a bit like spreading on the pb lightly and other times a whole glob of love is needed for the person or the situation.
You see we aren’t supposed to store up love – we are meant to give it away and build on the love we share. Because the more we spread on love, the easier it gets to make those sandwiches of love. And the more we love on people the more love is spread in the world. And just one sandwich would not keep us full, we have to keep making the sandwiches for other people and keep on spreading on the love, not just once but regularly.
Sometimes it’s hard to love our neighbor or a co-worker, or an in-law, and sometimes it’s hard to keep trying to love on someone because we are all human and sometimes people aren’t nice or loving, and sometimes that person continues to act in ways that make it hard to want to love them. Just remember, if they were starving would you give them a sandwich? Well, you can muster the strength to love through the anger or hurt and give them a big old helping on love- c’mon. I know you can. Just spread it on. Even just a little can feed a hungry heart. Often those hurting the most from their own wounds and the pain they carry inside, are the ones who need our grace and love the most.
And there are times that the person we can’t find the courage to love is our-self. Sometimes our guilt, or unhappiness, or sins keep us from believing we are always worthy of loving our-self and of other peoples affection and love- always. Honey, you are beautiful, and enough and you are loved.
Come on -go spread on love to all the people in your life. Remember small gestures, a moment of kindness, a quick hug- it all matters.
